Elmhurst Kitchen Remodeling

The kitchen is usually the busiest part of the house! Since everyone in the family uses it – not to mention guests when you’re hosting – it needs a bit of attention every now and then. With this Elmhurst kitchen remodeling project, the family space went from lack of working space to a warm and welcoming hub! Read on to find out what we did.

In order to fit in perfectly with the rest of the house’s design and style, the kitchen was remodeled with a traditional look with modern touches here and there. Storage was optimized with shelves and drawers nestled within the kitchen island. Traditional dark hardwood custom cabinets help the kitchen feel warmer, while the white island prevents everything feeling too dark. The refrigerator also received a custom cabinet integrated design, perfect for any fan of traditional style. While the cabinet hardware also retains the traditional style, black appliances and sleek plumbing hardware give the entire kitchen an updated, modern look. The dark granite countertop ties the entire kitchen together – the dark green and black colors pair wonderfully with the different cabinet styles to become one cohesive design.

We always say that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and the design should reflect that. Good design is not just about choosing the right colors – it’s about creating a space that works well and makes actions easier. To make the kitchen feel more like an all-inclusive family space, an island with a breakfast bar was added for an alternative to the dining room. Meeder Design & Remodeling has over 40 years of experience in the western Chicago suburbs area, including Elmhurst. Elmhurst Bathroom Remodeling, How Much Work is it, Really?

Elmhurst Bath Remodel

If you haven’t created a detailed plan for your project, then the scope of the project will grow as you start demolishing.

  • You’ll find pipes to replace,
  • wiring to update,
  • sagging/cracked joists,
  • water damage, etc.

It’s going to happen, so don’t get freaked out or upset by it… plan for it and don’t start with a budget already stretched to the max.

  1. One thing we frequently see in bathroom remodels is a lack of ventilation. If you don’t have an exhaust fan in there already, you need to add one.
  2. Plumbing, Electric, floor, walls, ceiling, toilet, vanity… the works.
  3. Remove floor and put down concrete board and tile.
  4. Remove existing shower and install tub with tiled surround.
  5. Repaint
  6. Install new toilet.
  7.  Install heated floors.
  8. Install new vanity light.
  9. Debris removal. Rent a dumpster or bag up trash and take to the landfill.

The biggest issue can be the tub in some homes. You may need to level the area where you are installing a tub. Older homes may have settled more and can be uneven. Also my floor was the same way. It was very uneven and had to me leveled before I could tile, but if they already have tile then the floor should be level.

Also if this is your only bathroom then plan out what you are doing and how long you think it will take so your bathroom isn’t unusable for an extended amount of time.

1. Have a plan for dust. Fiberglass & drywall dust is terrible & goes EVERYWHERE if you don’t have something in place to contain it,

2. Projects like this require a permit 99% of the time. Some places are stricter than others, but you could run into issues down the road if you complete this project without the proper permit (my local codes office has been known to cruise neighborhoods on trash day and sit outside the local dump to catch people doing unpermitted reno work).

Advice
Don’t use cheap fixtures
The connection can break at the tap because it is all plastic even if water is shut off in the house for vacations. This will cause any water in the pipes to empty onto the floor, down the vents, etc…  Water seepage can cause your house to stink for a long time like wet dust, and can cause ceiling damage.

Make sure before you start tearing everything out that you’ve ordered and received your materials. Don’t start tearing out your tile and then go and hope they have the one you want in stock. Same with the tub and vanity.
